Help your child want to do things (without the nagging, bribing or battles!)
As parents, we spend a surprising amount of time trying to get our children to do things. Whether it’s practising an instrument, eating healthy foods, completing homework or helping around the house, it can sometimes feel like an uphill battle. And while threats, bribes and rewards might get the job done in the short term, you may wonder whether there’s a better way to help your child become genuinely motivated to do things for themselves.
In this practical, research-based masterclass, Jess Kingsford explores how motivation works and, more importantly, how you can create the conditions that help your child develop a genuine desire to learn, grow and contribute, without always having to push them along.
Understand what really motivates your child:
Drawing on Self-Determination Theory, a well-established theory of human motivation developed by psychologists Edward Deci and Richard Ryan, Jess explains the difference between low-quality and high-quality motivation.
You’ll discover why children who are motivated primarily by threats, material rewards or a desire to impress others tend to enjoy activities less, give up more readily when things get difficult and be less inclined to choose those activities again when the external incentives disappear.
By contrast, when children experience the right conditions while doing something, they’re more likely to enjoy the activity, persist when it gets challenging, engage more deeply and want to do it again, without needing a bribe or reward.

Discover the needs that support genuine motivation:
At the heart of this masterclass are the three basic psychological needs that help people (adults and children alike) feel motivated and support their mental and emotional wellbeing.
Autonomy: Your child feels they have a say in what they’re doing and have freely chosen to participate, rather than feeling forced or controlled.
Competence: Your child feels capable, experiences progress and develops the sense that they’re getting better at something.
Relatedness: Your child feels loved and valued, cares about others and recognises that what they do for other people matters.
Jess unpacks what each of these needs means for children, including some common misunderstandings. You’ll learn why autonomy doesn’t mean giving children unlimited freedom, why competence is about feeling capable rather than believing you’re brilliant at everything, and why relatedness involves more than simply feeling loved. It also includes the powerful experience of knowing that you matter in the lives of others.

Learn how to put the theory into practice:
Understanding motivation is one thing; knowing what to do differently as a parent is another. That’s why this masterclass takes you through a practical, everyday example: helping your child WANT to fold the washing.
* You’ll explore how different parenting approaches can either undermine or support your child’s experiences of autonomy, competence and relatedness. For example, you’ll see how offering a few manageable choices, adjusting your expectations to your child’s abilities, encouraging their progress and expressing genuine appreciation can help turn an everyday household task into an opportunity for learning, connection and contribution.
* You’ll also learn how to rethink your role as a 'motivating' parent. Rather than seeing yourself as a motivational coach whose job is to push, persuade or energise your child, you’ll discover how to create an environment in which genuine motivation is more likely to develop.

What will you take away?
By the end of this Masterclass, you’ll have a clearer understanding of what drives your child’s motivation and you'll have practical ideas and strategies for nurturing your child's motivating, that you can begin using in your everyday family life straight away.
You’ll be better equipped to:
* Recognise the difference between motivation driven by external rewards and pressure, and motivation that comes from within.
* Give your child appropriate choices without overwhelming them or abandoning your parental boundaries.
* Help your child feel capable by setting realistic expectations, supporting their progress and encouraging them effectively.
* Strengthen your connection with your child while helping them recognise that their efforts and contributions matter to others.
* Rethink the use of threats, bribes and material rewards if you want your child to develop lasting interest in an activity.
* Encourage the kinds of behaviours that nurture care, kindness, generosity and contribution within your family.
